A Cut so Deep (Thornes and Roses # 1) by Dani Rene is the story of Nesrin. She is a lonely emotionally neglected young lady. A product of a dysfunctional family who has resorted to cutting herself to cope with her emotions. When her neglectful mother remarries a man richer than God, Nesrin knows it will not end well. What she doesn’t know is she has gained 3 stepbrothers who each harbor their own dark secrets. Damian the eldest 27 years old to her 18 years has caught her eye. They both have their issues and together they fight a battle of feelings that they shouldn’t have for each other. I liked both of these characters. My heart went out to Nesrin with how she was dealing with her demons but her journey with Damien was well worth the read. Damien with his brooding self, has issues that caused him to be cold and indifferent but something about Nesrin caused something to stir in him. The secrets they each hold had me wanting to get to the end but what I found out was more surprising than I thought. Damien and Nesrin were two people who didn’t know they needed each other and found their HEA. Looking forward to the next book. 4 stars for me.

Nesrin’s childhood was difficult, living with a mother who didn’t show her love. She just couldn’t live up to her standards. Damien is as cold and heartless as his father after his mother walked out of their lives. With the marriage of Nesrin’s mother to Damien’s father they are thrown into a house together while the parents are on their honeymoon. Two people who are jaded and don’t know what happiness finds each other and something sparks. With secrets and lies all around Nesrin will she be able to trust her heart or will she let the darkness overtake her.

This is my first book by this author and I was disappointed. I’ve heard good things about her books. I felt like this book was the typical step brother/ sister story. It didn’t keep me engaged and I didn’t connect with the characters. To be honest my idea of taboo runs a lot darker than most. So with this said I would still recommend this book to others. My favorite quote in the book is, “Love doesn’t find you when you want it or look for it. The feeling comes silently in the darkness and slices you open, burying itself in your veins, in your bones, right down to the marrow.” This quote really spoke to me. I will try again with another book by this author and see if my opinion changes.
