Tanya Rae’s rating: 4 of 5 stars
Strict Confidence is the 2nd book in the Rochester Trilogy. So going in I knew there would be another cliffhanger. We were left with a HUGE cliffhanger in book 1.ย At least book 2 wasnโt a jaw dropping cliffie. It doesnโt make it any easier to wait for the last book in this trilogy. The next book is Best Kept Secret and it canโt come soon enough.
Beau Rochester & Jane Mendozaโs story continues. Jane is in the hospital after being rescued from what happened at the end of book 1. Is that vague enough? I donโt want to give any spoilers! Beau keeps trying to deny his attraction to Jane. Jane is completely in love with this dark and brooding hunk of a man. Beau pushes Jane away, only to pull her back into a relationship only to push her away again.
There are secrets to be discovered as well as some twists and turns. Get ready because I think book 3 will have us on a roller coaster as Skye Warren brings on a climactic conclusion.

EXCERPT
โI thought we were going home.โ
โNo,โ I say gently. โRemember we talked about this? Home is going to need work. Construction work. It will take a long time. In the meantime, weโre going to stay at the inn.โ
Her face turns red. Iโve seen this color before. Exactly one time before.
We were at the wake for her parents. She had made it through the funeral with grave obedience. Stand here. Walk there. Say goodbye. All the times when I would have expected her to rage, she held her composure. It was only at the end, when families gathered at the Coach House, when they offered empty words of consolation and casseroles, that she lost it.
โGet out,โ she had screamed, her face red and splotchy, tears leaking down her cheeks. No one could console her. No one could reprimand her. In the end they left, one by one, darting glances of worry between me and her. In the hollow house, once everyone had gone, she beat her fists against me and sobbed into my chest for hours. Until she fell asleep in my arms.
She looks the same way now. Mutinous. Angry.
Consumed by grief.
โI want Kitten.โ
โSheโs at the vet, remember? Weโll pick her up soon.โ
โI want mac and cheese. And I want to go home.โ
Despite my general ineptitude as a guardian, Iโve tried. Iโve read books and listened to podcasts. Donโt raise your voice, they say. Lower your voice, and the child will mimic you. โWe canโt go home,โ I say, my words quiet. โThereโs yellow tape everywhere. Itโs a crime scene.โ
This, despite the books and the podcasts, is the wrong thing to say. I know it when her eyes turn wide. I see the whites around her blue pupils. Her little nostrils flare. โNo,โ she says. โNo. No. Iโm not going anywhere else. Iโm going home.โ
Weโre seconds away from the edge. I can see the waterfallโthe long drop and the sharp rocks at the bottom, but I donโt have a fucking paddle.
Jane turns back in her seat, her dark hair falling like silk over her shoulder. โPaige,โ she says. Thatโs all. Paige. Thereโs a wealth of emotion in that one word. Sorrow and sympathy.
Paigeโs lower lip trembles. โI hate this.โ
โYes,โ Jane says.
โI donโt want to stay at a hotel. I want to go home.โ
โYou want to go home,โ Jane says. โWhere itโs safe. Because youโre afraid.โ
โYou donโt understand,โ Paige says, her voice wavering.
โThen tell me,โ Jane says, coaxing. โWhy do you want to go home?โ
โIf Iโm not there, my mommy wonโt know where to find me.โ
The whispered words make my throat tighten. Christ. As if the child didnโt have enough to worry about with a goddamn fire destroying her home and belongings. She also thinks her motherโs coming back? Iโd fight a goddamn army for her. Iโd dive under an eighteen-wheeler if it would keep her safe, but I canโt protect her from false hope.
โYour mother always knows where you are,โ Jane says, reaching back. After a short pause, Paige holds her hand. They stay like that, linked. โShe loves you, wherever she is. Wherever you are. Nothing can stop that. Not a fire, not the ocean, nothing.โ
A sniffle. A sob. And then Paige does break.
