Like something out of a movie, Antonio appears from a dark aisle, flanked with wooden barrels.
He positions a metal chair a few feet from me and straddles it. His expression is unreadableโat least to me.
The ancient cave is eerily quiet, as though the spirits have melted into the stone walls, to await news of my fate.
Antonio observes me intently but doesnโt say a word for several moments, and I donโt dare say anything either.
โWhat do you have to say for yourself?โ he finally asks.
While his voice is neither warm nor forgiving, the hatred seems to have lessened. Or perhaps a bit of sleep, as little and disturbed as it was, has given me a renewed sense of strength.
I canโt just give up. I have to appeal to his sense of humanityโfor Isabel and Valentina. And for me.
Be humble, Daniela. Above all, be humble and contrite.
โIโm done,โ I croak. โYou won. Iโll marry you, and weโll live in Porto.โ
โYouโll marry me? This must be my lucky day.โ Heโs sarcastic, but not caustic. โI always win, Daniela. Always. I thought you would have learned that by now.โ
โIโm sorry I ran.โ
โI donโt believe you.โ
โI made a mistake.โ
โJust one?โ
โI wanted to be with Isabel and Valentina. Theyโll have a hard time surviving without me until Valentina is old enough to work.โ
โYou wanted to be with them? I donโt believe itโs a thing of the past. Youโre never going back to the US.โ
I feel a lump forming in my throat. โI wanted to be with my familyโwhatโs left of it. Thatโs a normal thing. I wonโt run again. But youโre right. Iโll never stop missing them.โ
โYour maid and her daughter are not your family.โ
I need to make him understand that they are familyโitโs true.
โThey are my family, Antonio. In the same way Cristiano and Lucas are yours. If either of them were in trouble, you would risk everything to help them.โ
โI would never take the kind of risk you took today.โ
โI donโt believe you,โ I say softly, and respectfully. โTheyโre like your brothers. Not all family is blood.โ
Antonioโs phone buzzes, and he gets up and disappears down the aisle he came up before. The door opens and closes seconds later. One set of footsteps approaches.
I hope itโs him returning. My best chance for survival is with him. No one else can make that decision.
When he comes back, heโs holding a small plate with a mug and some tea biscuits. He places it on his chair and unchains my wrists, briskly rubbing his palms over my arms and shoulders. I soak in the warmth of his handsโthe humanity I so desperately need right now.
Before he sits down, he hands me the cup of tea and the biscuits.
Iโm overwhelmed by the small kindness. Maybe heโs not going to kill me. I start to cry. Iโm leaking from my eyes and my nose, and no amount of sniffing can stop it from dripping off my face and onto my shirt.
He gets up and comes back, holding a wet facecloth and a clean T-shirt. He hands me the warm cloth. The heat feels so good against my face.
โTake off your shirt, and put this dry one on.โ
I donโt bother to ask if there are people watching, because it almost doesnโt matter. Despite my tears, Iโm numb inside.
โThe cameras are off,โ he murmurs.
He remembered my fear of being watched. I almost start to cry again.
โYouโve had a hellish twenty-four hours, and Iโm sure there are people who would feel youโve been punished enough. Iโm not one of those people.โ

Greed is the first book in A Sinful Empire Trilogy. This is also the first book that I have read by this author. I have to say that I am off to a great start with me wanting to read more by Eva Charles!
This is Antonio Huntsman and Daniela DโSousaโs story.
Danielaโs father Manuel, makes an arranged marriage contract with Antonio who will get the vineyard, something that Antonio wants. Daniela escapes to the US and Antonio lets her go since she is only 18 and he feels that she needs some time before they get married. To let her live a little. Turns out that might have been a mistake on his part.
The ending of this book brought an audible NOooooo from me! Yes it ends on a great big cliffie! For now I am anxiously awaiting the next release. Lust will be out in a couple of months.

Greed (A Sinful Empire Trilogy Book 1) by Eva Charles. Antonio Huntsman has made a deal that he will marry Daniela D’Sousa. Upon her father’s death Antonio is to marry his daughter and keep her safe, as payment for doing so Antonio will get her father’s prime vinyards.10 years her senior Antonio had no intention of marrying anyone and Daniela wasn’t even on his radar. However a blood oath is something you have to fufill. Daniela is reluctant to marrying a Huntsman. They are the ones responsible for her mother’s death. She knows this is what her father wants so she has to push her feelings aside. Having a crush on Antonio when she was a little girl is different than marrying the man when she knows doesn’t love her. Antonio and Daniela are in a tug of war with their feelings which made for an interesting story. Because this vinyard is worth a lot, prime real estate and the grapes make for an outstanding Port wine, their are other forces at play that are harmful not only to Daniela but to Antonio as well. As Antonio is trying to keep Daniela safe, he is also dealing with his feelings for her.ย Daniela wants nothing to do with any of it. She just want to keep her maid/confidante and her confidante’s daughter safe. An interesting story and a good start to this trilogy. So many secrets and so many players. This book was left with a surprise that has this reader excited for the next book. I am left with so many questions and I can’t wait for the resolution to all of them.ย A 4 star read for me.
