Synopsis

I married the right brother.

At least that’s what I tell myself at night, when I stare at the ceiling and listen to the rhythm of the grandfather clock down the hall. It never feels like the mere passage of time, but a countdown towards something inevitable.

Bobby Lightly is selfish, irresponsible, and careless. I haven’t seen him since the day I married his brother. He slipped out during the wedding reception without a word.

A year later, I heard Bobby was drafted to Korea. He never said goodbye to anyone. Never sent a letter. We had all come to terms with the fact that he was probably dead somewhere, either a victim of the war or its aftermath.

That is, until in the midst of an unrelenting heatwave, he showed up at the doorstep of the house I lived in with his brother.

Everyone thinks I’m cruel. Everyone thinks I should be easy on him. They think I don’t understand him. They all think I hate him.

But what no one understands is that it was Bobby who broke my heart.

And I think he’s back to do it again.

Reviews by the TaSTy Ladies:

Shannon P’s Review: 4.0 ★★★★                                                                                                                                                 If you had to make a choice between doing the “right” thing and what is expected of you OR following your heart and dealing with major [and I mean MAJOR] fallout with family and friends, what would you do? Are you strong enough to deal with the consequences of either choice? Choice one: He’s the so-called safe one. You try to make it work, but you begin to lose yourself in his wants and needs. If he isn’t enough for you, how can you ever be enough for him? Choice two: He’s the irresponsible one who can’t stay in one place for very long, and is also somewhat of a player. Therefore, can he really be trusted with your heart? This is the story of Rory, Lilly, and Bobby, and what a story it is.

I honestly had mixed emotions while reading this book. I could put myself in each character’s position as their story unfolded. There are many times that each person, in his or her own way, was trying to do the right thing. The question became right for whom. Why is one person’s happiness more important that another’s?

I found myself saddened by many missed opportunities of love and happiness. However, I was also joyful of new possibilities that were on the horizon. Many times people make assumptions of others based solely on rumor, and not fact, and those same assumptions end up costing so many so much. Nina G. Jones has written a compelling story that covers all of this and so much more. I give Swelter 4 stars.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Tanya Rae’s Review: 4.0 ★★★★                                                                                                                                                           I usually don’t read a lot of reviews before I write my review. But, I am having a hard time describing how I feel after reading Swelter. Then I started reading the reviews and I see there are quite a few readers that were left feeling like I do. Lost not sure what to write.

It took me a bit to really get into this book but, once I did I knew I needed to finish this story to find out what happens to Rory, Bobby & Lilly. Nina you definitely brought out emotions in me because you had me crying.

Swelter is actually a very thought provoking story and an emotional one! Because no matter what someone was going to get hurt by the outcome. Emotional hurt not physical hurt. Instead people actually got physically hurt & more but, I can’t say because I really try not to have spoilers. As you can see I am conflicted by the story. I thought Swelter’s story was different from the books that I usually read by Nina G. Jones.

Swelter was gifted to me for an honest review. I am going to give Swelter 4 stars and Nina G. Jones I look forward to reading more of your books.

Nikki K’s Review:      5★★★★★

Growing up Lily thought of brothers Bobby and Rory as her best friends. The three of them were inseparable. As the years past, emotions for one another grew and Lily knew she would end up married to a Lightly boy. The only question was which boy? Bobby being the younger brother took a back seat to Rory when it came to the affections of Lily. He let his big brother claim the girl who’d stolen his heart when he was just the annoying little brother before he knew what love was.

The day of Lily’s wedding proved to be the most painful and telling day of her life. She would walk away from her true love into the arms of his brother. Only years later would she see how much pain and heartache her choice would someday cause.

The heat in Swelter is not only caused by the lack air conditioning, it’s caused by the burning desire in the souls of two people denying their hearts in an attempt to live the way the thought they were supposed to. “We are supposed to live our dreams.” But unfortunately for some, dreams turn to nightmares.

Nina Jones has written a story of lost love and heartbreak that carried me through the full emotional spectrum. From the heated sex scenes to the contemptuous dialog, Swelter has all of the bases covered. Reading about the trials of these three people keep me wanting more, it was definitely one of those books that was hard to put down when the real world came calling. But the end, WOW! I didn’t see that coming and honestly wanted to  reread hoping the words in front of me would change. Understand, I loved the ending because it was well written and really a great way to wrap it up, but not at all what I expected.

If you’re looking for a very angsty book of love and desire, with lots of emotional upheaval, SWELTER will certainly fill the bill. The only thing that irked me about this book was the inability to tell what in decade(s) the story takes place. Based upon the storyline, I am lead to assume it takes place sometime between the late fifties and late sixties. Nina’s take on the way of life in that generation was fun for me to read.

I truly enjoyed this book and would certainly enjoy reading more from Nina Jones. I rate this book 5 Stars.

Swelter by Nina Jones Tells the story of Lilly who is married to Rory but is in love with his brother. A well written tale of a young lady who finds herself in a marriage of obligation instead of love. On the night she was to marry Rory she ends up giving into temptation, sleeping with her fiancée’s brother and falling in love with him. The three of them grew up together since they were children, Lilly, Rory and Bobby. Lilly and Rory were expected to be together while Bobby was the pain in the butt little brother who became known as the playboy. Doing what is right and expected of her Lilly goes through with the marriage and Bobby ends up leaving town.  After many years and with everyone thinking he is dead Bobby shows up at Lilly’s door. Everyone not even Rory can understand the feelings Lilly has for Bobby. Bobby comes back to find his parents dead and Lilly living with an abusive brother he never knew existed. What happens to the 3 is nothing you could have ever expected. I was not sure where the author was taking the story and how she was going to wrap this up but I was in for a pleasant surprise. What happened within the pages of this story I did not expect and was in for a real emotional rollercoaster. A well written story with a fabulous ending. I was given a copy of this book for an honest review and give this book 4.5 stars.

Excerpt

I snickered to myself. “He never had a chance. Rory never had a chance.” I shook my head in pity for the man I had grown to begrudge. “From the first day of our marriage, he couldn’t win because he wasn’t you.” I spun around, looking to the black forest for a way out, an exit from my tragic dilemma. “I don’t know how to fix this. He’ll never be you. It’s not his fault or our fault. It just is. And for years I resented him for that. I loved you. I loved hating you. I loved loving you. And when you left, I blamed him. It’s not fair. None of it is fair. For him. For us.” My shouts vanished into the dark night. Just like all my efforts, they meant nothing. “We tried so hard to do the right thing. We sacrificed us for him. And I think it just made things worse. Look at him.”

“Stop,” Bobby said firmly.

“I was so cold to him. I pushed him away so much. I created that man you see today. Do you think that was the right thing?”

“Stop,” Bobby repeated.

My emotions erupted out of me, explosive from years of being crammed into a secret space. Years of secrets I couldn’t tell. Of unrequited love. Of a life unfulfilled. Of dreams demolished. I pounded my fist to my chest. “It hurts. It physically hurts to see you every day. You are the first person I think about when I wake up. When I thought you died, I died. Rory was with a corpse.”

Bobby stepped closer to me. “Stop it, Lil.”

“And you keeping being you and I am trying so hard not to love you.” I didn’t care anymore about pretending. The threads were ripped and I felt as raw as the festering wound I had dealt with for the past seven years.

“And then you take me dancing and you tell me how you wrote me letters that you never sent and you bring me here. You make it impossible not to love you, dammit.” I thrust a finger in his direction and scowled. “And I hate you for that.”
