Introduction: I have known Layla Wolfe for a little while now. Of course, we met virtually on FB, in 2015. I love Layla Wolfe (pseudonym) and Karen Mercury’s books. If you know anything of Layla Wolfe you would know she owns a beautiful dog. Although I think that Myshkin owns her. Now I will get on with our interview. Thank you for allowing me to interview you.
Q: First things first, if we’re meeting somewhere to conduct this interview, where would it be? If there’s food involved, what type would it be?
A: INDIAN food! When I first went to Africa in 1984, I asked travelers in Nairobi, “So. What do people eat here.” “Indian food.” OH NO!! I LOATHED Indian food from what little my mother had cooked of it. Now to me it’s like a drug. It’s the #1 sort of food I could eat every day.
Now the interview begins.
Q: Why do you write?
A: I am compelled to. When I was about 4, my mother would read to me. I’d look over her shoulder and think “How powerful would it be to write? You write words, and someone on the other side of the globe reads them and is instantly transported into your world.” So I taught myself to read and write. I think I was a writer in a past life.
Q: How many books have you published?
A: Karen Mercury has something like 50, and Layla Wolfe has about 14.
Q: What do you do for fun?
A: Read! Only recently, though, when I developed a painful health issue, did I start reading voraciously. I read about 150 books last year, all of them nonfiction. With fiction, I was having a difficulty getting out of “editor” mode. The going was slow because I’d keep critiquing sentences. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me earlier to read nonfiction. I have several categories I’m interested in. True crime, of course. Science, especially neurology. Comedy. Dog books, especially rescue dogs. And there’s a subcategory of “people who had worse childhoods than me.” Love that one. Makes me feel superior, or at least better for a little while.
Q: Do you remember your first book? What is the name and date it was first released?
A: The Hinterlands, Karen Mercury, 2005.
Q: What is the latest book that you have written?
A: It Takes a Thief,The Bare Bones MC #7, Layla Wolfe, June 2017
Q: Do you feel like you push boundaries with your books?
A: I must, because every once in awhile an Amazon reviewer will go “This book was way out there.” I suppose that’s what that means.
Q: What do you want to tell the reader about your books?
A: I don’t take many things seriously. All my characters are deeply flawed, twisted, warped individuals. And of course, motorcycle clubs are the ideal atmosphere for slapstick humor. So you will encounter a wide array of damaged people falling down or otherwise stepping on rakes.
Q: What is the most frustrating part about writing?
A: The time involved. I don’t have much of it lately, so my output has suffered.
Q: What is the best thing about writing?
A: Just the sheer joy of creating worlds, or of meeting back up with characters you’d left behind!
Q: Is there a genre that you would like to write
A: Probably! But I’m not there yet.
Q: What’s next?
A: People seem to like the motorcycle romances best, so I am going to alternate between my Bare Bones and my Bent Zealots. Right now I’m working on Bent Zealots #5, A Cuddly Toy. A hot scientist, played by CNN’s Jake Tapper, comes to the rez, where a priest (Daniel Day-Lewis in sexy Last of the Mohicans mode) has set up a church. The scientist discovers massive uranium contamination left over from the atomic days, but his boss will send out any hitman to keep this intel under wraps. Assisted by the capable Bent Zealots, the two men fight The Man, who is determined to keep them down.
