And then Carter Anderson pushed his way into my world. Gorgeous, of course, charming, naturally, and cocky, a given—he called himself my friend and broke through every one of my carefully constructed walls.

Cue the “happily ever after,” right? Wrong.

This isn’t some fairy tale where the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan, and once the beauty beneath is revealed, all is right in the world. This is real life. When things seem too good to be true, it’s because they usually are. And when people say your past will come back to bite you, they mean it. And trust me, it does.

The Beauty Beneath by D.C. Renee At 12 Emerson experienced a traumatic incident that changed her life. Now at 24 she has achieved a lot for her age but it came as a result of a life of isolation. She has endured years of people being cruel and calling her names. Emerson has kept everyone even her family away from her by making herself look as hideous as she can. She feels her outside appearance should match her feelings inside. It is her penance for what she did. She doesn’t deserve to be happy. One night she is approached by Carter. Carter is a good looking lawyer who can have any woman he wants. Carter and his friends have made a bet about getting a girl and the girl they pick just so happened to be Emerson. When Carter approaches Emerson they both get something neither one expected. Emerson needs a date for her cousin’s wedding and she will help Carter to win the bet if he will go as her boyfriend. This was a story of two people who start out with a bet and end up with much more than they could have ever expected. I truly loved this story and the journey they both went on together. Emerson, Carter and the crew were a hoot and were a total barrel of monkeys. As a reader I got a story that took me on an emotional rollercoaster but at the end I was left with a smile on my face. I was given an Arc of this book for an honest review. I give this story 4.5 stars.
