Growing up, Brooke’s mother instilled a deep respect for the English language and a love of words. She taught Brooke to read and write and shared her appreciation for poetry. As a teen, poetry became an outlet for Brooke’s innermost thoughts and deepest, often times darkest feelings.
In school, teachers always told her “write what you know”, so that is what she did. At the not so tender age of forty-three, she started to write her first novel, I Am ShelbyJames (Beauty in the Darkness) and it is what she knows—emotions.
In her spare time—when she’s not writing—you can find Brooke cuddled on the couch with her husband of 20+ years, their fur babies, and a good (often naughty) eBook—unless of course she’s having cocktails with her Bestie at one of their favorite haunts.

I have known Brooke for a while now. We met originally in Nicole Edwards FB group – Nicole Nation. Brooke stays up late (I swear she doesn’t sleep) and I lived on the West Coast so we would have our late night chats. I consider Brooke as my bestie. Brooke has a heart of gold. She remembers all the little details that happen to you in life and is very thoughtful and even when I have forgotten an event in life she hasn’t and makes sure she asks how I am doing. Now let’s get started with our interview.
Setting the scene for our interview.
TW- First things first, if we’re meeting somewhere to conduct this interview, where would it be? If it were left up to me. We are on the beach drinking pina colada’s. Okay no pina colada’s make mine a bloody Mary and in is around 10’ish in the morning. BL: I’d like a Kettle One Screw Driver, please.
TW- If there’s food involved, what type would it be? We are eating brunch. BL: Brunch, I would probably enjoy Eggs Benedict and hash browns. Yum!
Now the interview begins.
TW- Why do you write? BL: because the words are in my head and need to get out. Whether it’s a poem or a story, I need to let the words free.
TW- Your first book, I Am ShelbyJames, was F/F bisexual. What made you want to write a F/F genre book? Was this genre easy or hard to write and if so why? I bet you thought this was just going to be a yes or no question. BL: I didn’t set out to write an F/F or bisexual book. When I started writing I Am ShelbyJames, I didn’t really know what genre the book was going to be. I only knew I was writing a story about two best friends. The one day the first sex scene came to me, I wrote it on my phone in 45 minutes and it was over 3000 thousand words. That’s when I realized I was writing F/F erotica. It wasn’t easier or harder per se, it’s the story that my Muse spoke to me so, it was all I knew to write.
TW- What do you want to tell the reader about your books? BL: Read them, they are good. LOL! My storylines in I AM ShelbyJames and Reflecting Roni may be bisexual F/F, but they are not only about the sex. They are about relationships and the fine line between love of a best friend and romantic love. Don’t focus on the gender of the characters, focus on the emotion.
TW- How did becoming a published author change you or your life or has it yet? BL: I don’t know that it has changed my life, but it has changed how I feel about myself. I have gained pride in myself for accomplishing a lifelong goal.
TW- Since you are still a relatively new author do you find the process of writing hard or easy and why? BL: I’ve always written in one form or another, whether poetry or short stories, so that is still the same. The difference now is trying to write a full novel. But no, I don’t find writing itself any harder.
TW- Reflecting Roni is your 3rd book. What would you like to tell us about this book? BTW I loved this book. But, then I have told you that already. BL: Reflecting Roni is a bit different from I am ShelbyJames. It gives more of a history of why Roni and Shelby are who they have become. It also shows that with the love of a true friend or soulmate as the girls call each other, you can get through anything.
TW- What is the most frustrating part about writing? BL: The most frustrating part about writing is finding the time. It seems when the words are there, I am at work or not in a place conducive to writing. When I sit down with the intent of writing the words elude me.
TW- What is the best thing about writing? BL: The best part of writing is getting my story across in a way that makes me happy and in some way, touches my readers. There is nothing better than getting a message from a reader telling me that they are excited or angry or that my story resonated with them in some way. Gah, I can’t even explain how amazing that feels.
TW- What’s next? BL: I’ve got a few stories started, but the one I have the most written in is the next in the Beauty in the Darkness series. I am really looking forward to seeing how this book unfolds. I think it will be a sexy, fun read.
TW- Now that you have already tackled a tough genre F/F, is there another genre you would like to write in? BL: I am open to writing all genre, although I don’t see myself ever writing paranormal, fantasy or sci-fi. Those are not areas that I am in tune to. I think I would enjoy writing psychological suspense or even a thriller. When I sit to write I only have a broad idea, not necessarily a plotted story so, anything that comes to me, I go with. In other words, anything is possible.

TW- What is your favorite word? BL: Oh, that’s a tough one. The first word that comes to mind is freedom.
TW- What is your favorite dirty word. BL: Fuck, but not because I write erotica. Because it is a word with a variety of meanings and all are dependent upon the inflection in your tone and the context in which you use it.
TW- What is your least favorite word? BL: exclude
TW- Is there a word we will NEVER find in your writing? BL: The C word. I will use every other word under the sun, just not that one.
TW- What is your favorite adult toy? BL: I can be obvious and say my crop or my magic wand (which I do LOVE), but why be obvious? My MIND is my favorite adult toy. If I use it correctly I can make anything erotic, sexy and orgasmic.
